It's been many years since I eat at Mi Madre's, but the best part is that they remain good in terms of service and food. We came here for breakfast and we both had carne guisada combos. Yummy!!! It was such a nice weather that we ate outside at the patio and that made the food taste even better. We didn't know that they now have a bar upstairs. We want to try some other time!

Tacos tacos! I finally made it Mi Madre for a quick bite to eat. This place has been open for decades and can't believe I haven't been. Well finally I got tacos! The staff was so friendly and Veronica, our server was helpful. My friend and I only ordered tacos but the 3 different kinds we tried filled us up! We ordered a migas, crispy beef, and chicken fajita. The came out overflowing with filling. They did not disappoint! Try the limonada. It's fresh and actually ended up making an Arnold Palmer out of it. Will definitely be back to try the rest of the menu! Yum!

The service here was wild. I ordered food beforehand and was told that it would take 25 minutes. I pulled up to the location and it was crazy buzy, super small parking lot with a handful of spots. Street parking that was packed up and down every side street. I arrived a little early and had to park a few streets away. By the time I got to the counter to pick up the food I think only 15 minutes had passed since I ordered it and my order was not only finished but packed up and ready with my name on it. These guys for real packed so much flavor in every bite it was crazy with how fast the food was prepared even with a restaurant that was packed shoulder to shoulder. A massively deserved 5/5 stars for the Carnitas that were perfect, the quesadillas that my picky nephews loved, and the speedy service that was out of this world friendly!!!

Unassuming place with really good food. We went with the daily special (pork enchiladas) and chicken mole enchiladas. Those two were both damn good - the mole was a darker one and kinda sweet. The pork was soft (not mushy!) and flavorful. The salsa served with the chips was obviously home made, fresh, and mildly garlicky- YUM! (She let us take the table leftovers with us!). She also gave us some of their green salsa (maybe called "Diablo"?) and it's amazing as well. Citrusy and creamy and ... a decent bite to it. It's worth it to mention the tortilla chips- they're very distinctive. Hard to describe, but they have these craters (that pocket a bit more of that red salsa) and a really great taste. She mentioned they're made specifically for them. I don't think we've ever had chips like that! We happened to be there during happy hour so got margaritas with tajin on the rim. Wish we were gonna be around longer, we'd have come back to do happy hour right! Overall, great food, very attentive service, and a nice vibe. Seriously, can someone convince them to open a location in Los Angeles?

Sunday night cinco de mayo and it's hopping! The food was great and service was speedy and nice. Everything looked so appetizing it was hard to choose, a great local spot for Tex-mex after landing in Austin a few hours ago.

Normal chips. Normal salsa. Normal main dishes. Respectable, decent but not that different from 300 other Mexican restaurants in Austin. * * * Why the five stars? The Horchata. I give five stars to any restaurant which makes the best version of some dish in the world - no matter what else is going on elsewhere on the menu. (Okay, if you could eat something that is awful or could kill you, no five stars.) Mi Madres's is totally solid, so no landmines here. The Horchata is "Best of Class". So they get the five stars. * * * What is so special about the horchata? a) It is homemade. Nearly everyone else in Austin uses preprepared powder. b) It tastes overwhelmingly and massively of cinnamon. Cinnamon is what makes horchata good. * * * Would you drive all the way up from Houston just to get a really good horchata? I might not drive all the way from Houston. From Del Valle, no question asked. I am off to Mi Madre's. Or rather, I am off to Mi Madre's if I am not eating in the awesome awesome Mexican food trucks that are on the north side of Highway 812. Del Valle's Mexican food scene is over the top good.
